Ligonier Ministries National Conference 2014

We are back from yet another Ligonier National Conference, my 10th!  I love the conference so much and was so sad when it was over this year.  The conference lectures have just been posted on Ligonier.org for free streaming for a  couple of weeks.  They are all worth listening to but my favorites this year were:

The World the Flesh and the Devil by Voddie Bacham

Do Not Love the World by Robert Godfrey.

The Q & A sessions were also very good and at times quite lively!  In the first Q&A session RC answered the question I submitted having to do with the view many of my libertarian Christian friends hold, namely that government should not be involved in marriage.  RC had a very strong opinion on this matter.  You can here this question asked and answered at 14:13 minutes into the first Q&A session.

The bookstore was filled with wonderful books again this year and here is what we bought.

The Conference Draws Nigh!

It's that time of year again, for the Ligonier Ministries National Conference- yay!

Conference Week!

Matt and I are off to the Ligonier National Conference this week in Orlando.  This will be my 9th time going and Matt's first time.  I am so excited for him to experience this awesome conference.  To hear the outstanding preaching and join in the hymn singing,  to scour the amazing bookstore and soak up the Florida sun, to fill up on Cheesecake Factory at night and to hang out with our group of conference goers (this year Regan and Cbass) will be GREAT FUN!  On top of this we have just learned our good friend Ben Richards will be in Orlando  this week too so we will get a chance to catch up with him.  God's blessings overfloweth!

Here is this year's conference schedule.  I love the theme the Christian Mind.  It's going to be AWESOME!!!  Feel free to drop in as it is always live streamed online.

Have You Lost Your Mind?

Christians today often do not think. Logic is considered worldly while contradiction is prized as a hallmark of true faith. In this message, Dr. R.C. Sproul will provide an overview and introduction to the sad state of the Christian mind today, providing real world illustrations and examples of some of the problems we must overcome.
R.C. Sproul
2:15 p.m. 3:20 p.m.

We Don’t Need No Education

At one time, Christians, particularly Reformed Christians, were the intellectual leaders in America, but this is no longer the case. We are largely marginalized and have abdicated intellectual leadership to secularists. In this message, Dr. W. Robert Godfrey examines the role that anti-intellectualism played in this self-inflicted problem and what we must do to turn it around.

I've Got Half a Mind Too...

Our modern culture today is a theater of the absurd where irrationalism and relativism run rampant. We are told that Christianity may be “our truth,” but it isn’t everybody’s truth. In this message, Dr. Albert Mohler looks at the roots of today’s irrationalism, exposes it’s dangers, and explains how we as Christians should respond to it and inoculate ourselves against it.

The (True) Scandal of the Evangelical Mind

One of the most serious scandals of the evangelical mind is the fact that it has lost any coherent grasp of the “evangel” – the gospel. Among those claiming to be evangelicals, substitutionary atonement, imputation, and justification are all denied. In this message, Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr. reminds us that we cannot have a Christian mind without the Christian gospel.

Losing My Religion

Even among those who hold to the basic truths of the Christian gospel, there is a tendency to remain content with milk and never strive to dig into the meat of the Word. Doctrinal shallowness is endemic and accepted. In this message, Dr. Sinclair Ferguson encourages us all to wrestle with the deep things of God and to stretch ourselves by reading some of the great theologians of the past.
Sinclair Ferguson

Rock of Ages & the Ages of Rocks

The contemporary media portrays the relationship between science and Christianity as one of perpetual conflict and warfare. But it was not always so, as many of the most prominent scientists in history were faithful Christians. In this message, Dr. Stephen Meyer explains why the two, when properly understood, are not in conflict and reminds us that Scripture and creation can never ultimately contradict each other.

OPTIONAL SESSION: White Horse Inn Live Taping & Audience Q&A

Growing in Grace & Knowledge
Knowledge and truth have fallen on hard times in contemporary American culture. We are distracted from thinking deeply about anything because we are too busy focusing on ourselves and our own entertainment. Sadly, this problem is not merely “out there,” in the world. Overnight, contemporary churches have become entertainment centers and purveyors of self-centered spirituality. Encouraged by smiling television preachers to have our best life now, modern Christians have almost lost sight of Jesus and his saving work. We desperately need to follow the advice of the Apostle Peter, who encouraged believers to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Pet 3:18). That’s what’s on tap for this special live taping of the White Horse Inn: “know what you believe and why you believe it.”

The Fear Factor

In the centuries following the Enlightenment, the flood of challenges to Christianity has been ongoing, and in the last century they have increased at a rapid rate. Scientific advances have become challenges. As the world has grown smaller, encounters with other religions have also raised challenges. In this message, Dr. Michael Horton looks at the way many Christians have responded in fear rather than taking up the challenge and offering a reasoned defense of the faith.

Steven J. Lawson

OPTIONAL SESSION: Christ & Creativity

Michael Card
8:00 p.m. 8:50 p.m.

When Worlds Collide

Truth is coherent, and we weaken our defense of it when we deal with issues in an atomistic manner. In order to regain our Christian mind, we have to have a coherent, fully-orbed Christian worldview. In this message, Dr. Del Tackett explains the importance of a Christian worldview, what it entails, and how we articulate it.

Ignorance Is Not Bliss

The apostle Paul knew his opponents’ views better than they did and never argued from a position of ignorance. In order to regain our Christian mind, we too must once again engage the world in a fully-informed way. In this message, Dr. Robert Godfrey explains the importance of training up a new generation of Christians who will reject anti-intellectualist approaches and engage the philosophical, scientific, and religious challenges of the day in a fully-informed, Christ exalting way.
Robert Godfrey
9:25 a.m. 10:25 a.m.

Foolishness to the Greeks

Anti-intellectualism is not the only danger Christians face. Those who seek to reclaim the Christian mind face the opposite danger — allowing a desire to please God to mutate into pride and a vain desire for worldly respect. In this message, Dr. Steven Lawson explains how we must walk a fine line and never accommodate the gospel in an attempt to please the cultured despisers of Christianity. We have already seen the sad results of a previous attempt to do this in the nineteenth century.
Steven Lawson
11:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m.

Love the Lord Your God with All Your Mind

Ours is an age that emphasizes emotionalism and experience. Emotions and experiences are not necessarily bad things, but they should not be set up in opposition to the mind, to reason. In this message, Dr. R.C. Sproul exhorts us to remember that Jesus called us to love God with all of our hearts, with all of our souls, and with all of our minds.

Winter Has Struck But...

Okay, so winter has finally struck up in Minnesota with below zero temperatures and some snowfall.  It was inevitable I guess.  But we are keeping warm with thoughts of our upcoming trip to Orlando, Florida for this year's Ligonier Ministries National Conference- yippee!  This year will be the best conference of all as my dear husband will be attending with me for the first time ever.  I have always wanted to share in this with him so I am really, really, really excited!  This year's conference theme is the Christian mind and is being advertized thusly...

BURNING HEARTS ARE NOT NOURISHED BY EMPTY HEADS

At Ligonier Ministries’ 2012 National Conference, we will be addressing this problem as we consider the theme of “The Christian Mind.” From March 15-17, 2012, R.C. Sproul will be joined by Sinclair Ferguson, Robert Godfrey, Michael Horton, Steven J. Lawson, Albert Mohler, Stephen Meyer, R.C. Sproul Jr., and Del Tackett to consider the importance of building a Christian worldview, the role of education in the Christian life, science and God’s natural revelation, defending the faith, and many other topics. It promises to be an exciting time of training and fellowship as we all learn how better to think like Christians in order that we might live like Christians.

On top of this spectacular event we will also enjoy our time in Orlando by visiting the Cheesecake Factory nightly and this cool looking cigar lounge called Corona Cigar Co.  Once the conference is over we will head down to Tampa for a few days where we will stay in a hotel on the water.  Tampa has a number of cigar places to visit as well as Busch Gardens which is easily the best theme park in the country as it houses wild animals and roller coasters!  Awesome!

Conference Lectures Are Up

Ligonier Ministries has put the 2011 National Conference lectures up on their blog for people to watch.

They are all worth listening to but my favorite would be a toss up between R.C. Sproul Jr.'s message called "Almighty Over All" and John Piper's message on "25 Years of Desiring God."

Enjoy!

Conference Booty

I try not to go crazy at the conference bookstore each year but it is so hard because I love books!  Thankfully I have budget and only a carry-on bag to get books home- this helps keep me under control.  Here is this year's booty...

On top of this my mom also bought some great items she is sharing with me: the mp3 audio of this year's and last's year National Conference lectures and mp3 audio of the entire Bible as read by Max McLean.  Hope my ipod is hungry!

My Soul Refreshed in the Lord!

Just back from the Ligonier Ministries National Conference in 85 degree Orland, Florida.  What can I say but praise be to the Lord who poured out His word upon me richly at this conference, making me wise unto salvation, teaching, reproving, correcting, and training me in righteousness!  Honestly, this conference was just what I needed to refresh my soul and was an answer to many of my prayers over these last few months.

Here are a few pics from some good times together in Orland last week...

Time for the Conference- YIPPEE!

My mom, sisters, and friend Cbass have been attending the Ligonier Ministries National Conference in Orlando, Florida since 2004, missing only last year due to the dates being moved to summer.  This will be our 7th conference! We love to go for the two and half days of awesome Bible teaching, the amazing book store, and the time of fellowship and fun we have together.  Not to mention the fact that it is in one of our favorite places to visit, Florida!  This is the first time I will be traveling with my family from Minnesota and this is the first time I am really looking forward to one of the aspects they always look forward to- the weather!  Spring is trying to take hold in Minnesota but March is know n for snow storms filled with heavy, wet snow.  The temps here have been slowly creeping up but 80 degrees this week in Orlando is going to feel awesome!  We leave Wednesday and the conference starts Thurdays morning.  The speakers this year are Sinclair Ferguson, Robert Godfrey, Steven Lawson, John Piper, RC Sproul, and RC Sproul Jr.  I can't wait to hear all the lectures as well as the Westminster Brass bringing down the house with A Mighty Fortress!  I love when they play Holy, Holy, Holy and stop the music towards the end of the song and let the voices of the saints rise to heaven in a glorious chorus!  I love the banter of the the guys back and forth on stage and how RC always cracks himself up while he preaches.  I love spending hours in the bookstore which is huge and has any book I could ever want.  I love going out to eat at yummy places with the ladies every night like the Cheesecake Factory...  Oh, I can't wait to go!

Here is this year's schedule:

Thursday March 24

Forty Years of Proclaiming God's Holiness (RC Sproul) Ligonier Ministries' purpose is to awaken as many people as possible to the holiness of God by proclaiming, teaching, and defending God's holiness in all its fullness. In this lecture, Dr. R.C. Sproul will expand on this statement, explaining why a proper understanding of the holiness of God is absolutely crucial if we are to know the true God as well as the depths of our depravity.

War on the Word (Steven Lawson) The first temptation recorded in Scripture is an attack on the trustworthiness of God’s Word. Such attacks have continued unabated to our own day. In the past, such attacks were usually made by liberals, but today we hear more and more doubts cast upon God’s Word by professed evangelicals. In this lecture, Dr. Steve Lawson reminds us of the importance of a commitment to the authority, inspiration, and inerrancy of Scripture.

Why the God-Man? (Sinclair Ferguson) The Apostle Paul declared to the Corinthian church that he had decided to know nothing among them except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. The person and work of Jesus are at the heart of the Christian faith. In this lecture, Dr. Sinclair Ferguson explains what it means to confess our faith in one who is fully God and fully man and what it means that this Jesus was crucified for our sins.

OPTIONAL SESSION: Redeemed Womanhood - Generation to Generation (Susan Hunt)

OPTIONAL SESSION: The Next Story (Tim Challies)

Questions & Answers With R.C. Sproul and Ligonier's Teaching Fellows Sinclair Ferguson, Robert Godfrey, Steven Lawson, and R.C. Sproul Jr.

Friday March 25

Defending the Faith (RC Sproul) In his first epistle, Peter informs believers that we are to be always prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks us for a reason for the hope that is in us. In this day and age, the number and kinds of questions that arise are astounding, but this does not give us an excuse to give up the fight. In this lecture, Dr. R.C. Sproul reminds us that apologetics is the duty of every Christian in every walk of life.

Almighty Over All (RC Sproul Jr.)  Most Christians claim to believe in the sovereignty of God, but many define His sovereignty in a way that ultimately exalts man over God. Scripture continually magnifies the sovereignty of God, but what does this mean? In this lecture, Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr. explains what it means to say that God is sovereign and examines the implications of this confession for our lives and ministries.

Worshiping the Triune God (Steven Lawson) Fallen human beings have devised many ways of worshiping their gods, but the living God will only be worshiped in a manner that honors Him. We know we are called to worship our Lord in a manner pleasing to Him, but what does this look like? In this lecture, Dr. Steven Lawson examines the biblical principles of worship and explores the insights of the Reformers into this vitally important facet of Christian faith and life.

OPTIONAL SESSION: Believing God (RC Sproul Jr.)

OPTIONAL SESSION: Pillars of Grace (Steven Lawson)

Don’t Waste Your Life (John Piper) Many people, even Christians, go through their lives devoted to trivial things, living for comfort and pleasure. There is no passion for God. In this lecture, Dr. John Piper will exhort all of us to not waste our lives on such trivial pursuits. Only a life passionately devoted to the cross of Christ and the glory of God will be considered a life not squandered on the last day.

Clothed in Righteousness (RC Sproul) Justification is the article upon which the church stands or falls, the main hinge on which religion turns. Yet as important as justification is, many Christians remain confused about it, and others actively blur its features. In this lecture, Dr. R.C. Sproul will explain the basic tenets of the biblical doctrine of justification by faith alone that we might know the ground on which we stand before a holy God.

OPTIONAL SESSION: An Unexpected Journey (Robert Godfrey)

OPTIONAL SESSION: By Grace Alone (Sinclair Ferguson)

Ministry Reflections with John Piper & R.C. Sproul A round table discussion on the valuable lessons learned by each man throughout their ministry experiences as well as advice to the next generation of Christians and leaders in the church.

Saturday March 26

Evangelism & Missions (John Piper) The highest motive for missions and evangelism is not obedience to the Great Commission, although obedience is required. Nor is the highest motive love for sinners, great as that love may be. The greatest motive for missions and evangelism is a passionate zeal for the glory of Jesus Christ. As Dr. John Piper will explain in this lecture, worship of the living God is the fuel and goal of missions and evangelism.

Pleasing God (Robert Godfrey) Scripture calls us to be holy as God is holy and exhorts us to strive for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. There are pitfalls, however, as we strive to mortify the flesh: we can easily fall into either legalism or antinomianism. In this lecture, Dr. Robert Godfrey will provide biblical guidance and wisdom for Christians struggling against the world, the flesh, and the devil.

Twenty-Five Years of Desiring God (John Piper) Celebrating the truth that God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him, Desiring God was published twenty-five years ago to explain how delight is our duty. In this lecture, Dr. John Piper will expand on the themes and vision of this paradigm-shattering work.

Desiring God Pastor's Conference & Booty

My sisters and friend Cbass serve as often as they can at the Desiring God conferences put on by John Piper here in the Twin Cities a few times a year. Now that I live here I am able to join in the fun too. Last night my sisters, Cbass, and I welcomed the incoming pastors for this year's conference on, "the powerful l ife of the praying pastor." About 1700 Men came from all over the country and even a few foreign countries. It was such a blessing to welcome them and see their smiling faces, knowing they were here to be refreshed and encouraged in the word so they can continue in their personal growth and then go home to feed their flocks! We got to give them a bag of goodies (books!) which the volunteers also receive. Here is a picture of what the goodie bag contained plus the new Piper book I bought called "Think: the Life of the Mind and the Love of God." This conference housed an amazing bookstore with reduced prices and let me tell you I had to run through it as it was a dangerous place to be for me! If we are still living here next February I am hoping to house our Pastor from Tucson who would like to come to this conference.  You can listen to and live stream the conference at Desiring God.

Ligonier Ministires 2010 National Conference

The Ligonier Ministries National Conference which I usually attend each March with my moms, sisters, and friend was moved this year instead to June. Due to schedules we were unable to go.  However I was so happy to be able to live-stream the conference this year and to my surprise the conference videos have been archived online and are available for viewing now.  This years pre-conference focused on Christians and types of media while the main conference topic was "Tough Questions Christians Face."  I have already listened to about half the lectures and they are excellent as expected. I don't know how long they will be available so make your way here to listen.

2009 Ligonier Conference Pics

In March I attended my 6th annual Ligonier Ministries National conference in Orlando, Florida with my mom, my two sisters, my mother-in-law, my friend Cbass, and a new addition who is a friend of my sister's, Donna. This conference is always one of the major highlights of my year. I love the Bible teaching, the speakers and their banter, the beautiful music of the Westminster Brass, the bookstore, and of course sharing all of this with my family and friends. After the conference each night we go out to eat at our favorite restaurants and when the conference is over we relax by the pool, shop, and eat more. It is always a good time. This year's conference was extended a bit in order to celebrate the 500th anniversary of John Calvin. The pre-conference, on Calvin, started earlier in the day so we had a few more lectures to take in than usual. The actual conference, on the Holiness of God, also went a little longer than usual. It was great to have all the speakers and to hear all their awesome teaching but I have to admit my brain gave out well before it was over. I listened to all the speakers but suffice it to say I am glad I have the mp3s so I can listen again!
This years speakers were:

  • Al Moler

  • Ligon Duncan

  • Sincalir Ferguson

  • Steven J. Lawson

  • R.C. Sproul Jr.

  • Derek Thomas

  • Alistar Beg

  • D.A. Carson

  • Thabiti Anyabwile

  • Robert Godfrey

  • R.C. Sproul
R.C. junior and senior are always among my favorite speakers at the Ligonier conferences as well as Sinclair Ferguson. This year I was surprised to be blown away by the first sermon of Steven J. Lawson on the legacy of Calvin. This lecture was so awesome the audience gave him a standing ovation. It was my favorite lecture of the conference. If I can find a way I will post it for your listening pleasure!

Preparing for the Conference

These past few weeks I have been reading particular books in order to prepare myself for the Ligonier Ministries Conference which is next week. This year the theme of the main session is the holiness of God and the preconference is on John Calvin. In my preparation I recently read Sproul's book "The Holiness of God." Have you read it? It is a classic and well worth a read. Sproul is very gifted at taking ideas that are huge (like the holiness of God) or hard to understand (like predesitnation) and making them understandable and a joy to read about. He is a very intelligent man and clear communicator. If you have not read this book I highly recommend it. The other book I am just finishing up with is a short book on Calvin called "Calvin for Armchair Theologians" by Christopher Elwood. This book gives a great overview on the life and theology of John Calvin. I've really enjoyed reading the overview of his theology as it rings so true to the Bible. The bulk of the book is on his theology and is written in a clear and engaging way. Here is a short snippet from the book which I liked where the author is addressing Calvin's theology regarding order in the church:
"That is the basic aim of discipline, in Calvin's view: to hold together and strengthen the church as the body of Christ, a community that witnesses to and lives out Christ's love. So, for Calvin, discipline is not, as with the Donatists and Anabaptists, a means of creating a church of the pure. Calvin's church is a church of sinners, but it is a place where sin is being overcome through the peaching of the gospel. In his view, then, the ancient creeds that call the church "holy" are not incorrect. But instead of thinking of this holiness as an already accomplished fact, we ought to recognize it as the goal that God ultimately will achieve."

The Conference Draws Nigh

Its that time of year again- time for the Ligonier Ministries National Conference in Orlando, Florida. YIPPEE!! This conference is one of the major highlights of my year. I first went with my mom and sister, Regan back in 2003. God has been so good to let us attend each year ever since and has added to our group yet again. This time it will be my mom, my sisters, my mother-in-law, and two friends. This year the conference is lengthened in order to celebrate the 500th anniversary of John Calvin. And on top of that there will also be over twice as many speakers to bless our ears. Here is this years awesome lineup:

MINI-CONFERENCE: John Calvin (1509–2009) — Celebrating a Legacy
In 2009, we celebrate the 500th birthday of John Calvin. It is only appropriate at this time to reflect on his legacy. In the mini-conference, four participants will discuss Calvin’s impact in several aspects of the church’s life and thought. There will be four lectures followed by a Question & Answer time:
1. R. Albert Mohler – John Calvin: Preacher and Teacher
John Calvin was one of the most important figures in the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century. Today, five hundred years after his birth, his influence continues to be felt. In this message, Dr. Mohler will reflect on the life and work of Calvin, focusing in particular on his role as a preacher and teacher of the Word.
2. Ligon Duncan – Calvin and the Christian Life
John Calvin is sometimes perceived as a dry and dusty academic whose writings deal only with abstract theological topics. To read Calvin, however, is to read one who was devoted to seeing God’s Word impact the lives of Christian people everywhere. In this message, Ligon Duncan will explore some of Calvin’s most practical wisdom for those who seek to follow Christ.
3. Sinclair Ferguson – The Doctrines of Grace
Much of the significance of the Protestant Reformers such as John Calvin is found in their rediscovery of the biblical doctrines of grace. After having been buried for centuries under unbiblical doctrines and traditions, their rediscovery and proclamation turned Europe upside down. In this message, Dr. Ferguson will look at Calvin’s formulation of these crucial doctrines and explain why they are no less significant today.
4. Steven J. Lawson – The Legacy of John Calvin
The modern history of the church and of the world would be entirely different without John Calvin. The influence of his thought has been felt not only in the teaching and worship of the church, but also within politics, economics, and the wider culture. In this message, Dr. Lawson will look at the legacy of Calvin, explaining what we can learn from him today.
Questions and Answers
Dr. Sinclair Ferguson, Dr. Ligon Duncan, Dr. Steven Lawson, Dr. Al Mohler
MAIN SESSIONS: The Holiness of God
The angels declare that God is “Holy, Holy, Holy.” Without a proper grasp of God’s holiness we do not understand who He truly is, nor do we understand who we truly are. Once we begin to grasp the true meaning of God’s holiness, our lives and our worship will be forever changed. In this conference, prominent Reformed Christian teachers will expound and reflect upon what the Bible says about God’s holiness and ours. The main sessions will consist of eleven lectures:
1. R.C. Sproul – I Am the Lord, There is No Other
Before he discovered the Gospel, contemplation of God’s holiness and his own sinfulness drove Martin Luther to despair. What did he grasp about holiness that most of us do not? In this lecture, Dr. Sproul will introduce the topic of the conference by explaining the meaning of the biblical concept of holiness.
2. R.C. Sproul, Jr. – Train Up Your Children: Family Worship of the Holy God
The worship of our sovereign God is not to be relegated to a mere hour or two each Sunday. Instead, our worship of Him should pervade every aspect of our lives. In this lecture, Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr. will exhort believers to worship God as a family, providing encouragement and practical instruction.
3. Sinclair Ferguson – Hallowed Be Your Name: The Holiness of the Father
In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus instructed His disciples to acknowledge the Father’s holiness and to adore Him in their every prayer. He is the one whom the seraphim adore, singing, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!” In this lecture, Dr. Ferguson will explore what the Bible teaches us concerning the holiness of our Father in heaven.
4. Steven J. Lawson – The Holy One of God: The Holiness of Jesus
The disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ referred to Him as “the Holy One of God.” In doing so, they said something not only about His character, but also about His relationship to the Father. In this lecture, Dr. Lawson will look at what the Bible teaches us about the purity and sinlessness of Christ.
5. Alistair Begg – The Breath of the Almighty: The Holy Spirit
The third person of the Trinity is the Holy Spirit, the one whom Job refers to as “the breath of the Almighty.” His work includes conforming believers to the holy image of Christ. In this lecture, Dr. Begg will look at the person and work of the one person of the Trinity whose very name includes the adjective “holy.”
Questions & Answers
Dr. Sinclair Ferguson, Dr. Steven Lawson, Dr. Alistair Begg, Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr. Moderated by R.C. Sproul
6. Thabiti Anyabwile – Cosmic Treason: Sin and the Holiness of God
The sinfulness of sin is not grasped in our day because the holiness of God is not grasped. Sin will only be understood for what it is when God is understood for who He is. In this lecture, Rev. Anyabwile will explain the true sinfulness of sin in the light of the holy and pure character of God.
7. D. A. Carson – A Holy Nation: The Church’s High Calling
The history of redemption reveals God calling a people out of the world to be a holy people. In this lecture, Dr. Carson will examine why God has called His people in both the old and new covenants to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation, and he will explain what this means for us as believers today.
8. Robert Godfrey – Wounded for Our Transgressions: The Holiness of God and the Cross
All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. This is the universal problem faced by all men, a problem requiring a solution man cannot provide. In this lecture, Dr. Godfrey will examine why the holiness of God required an atonement for sin and how Jesus fulfilled that requirement for us.
9. Derek Thomas – Be Ye Holy: The Necessity of Sanctification
According to Scripture, we are justified by faith alone in Jesus Christ alone. Yet our Lord calls those who have been so justified to a life of holiness. In this lecture, Dr. Thomas will explain the importance and necessity of individual sanctification as well as the means God has provided for it.

10. R.C. Sproul – A Consuming Fire: Holiness, Wrath, and Justice
There have always been those who have argued that a truly holy God could not or would not consign anyone to eternal punishment. Such, they say, is inconsistent with God’s love. In this lecture, Dr. Sproul will explain why the holiness of God is not inconsistent with eternal punishment of sin, but in fact requires it.

Review of 2008 Ligonier's National Conference- Day 3

The end of the conference is always sad for me and at the same time by the third day my brain is ready for a break! This year was no exception. The morning started out with Sinclair Ferguson preaching on "The Nature of Saving Faith." This was the most challenging message of the conference for me- one I will have to listen a few more times. Ferguson focused on how it is not faith in Christ that saves but Christ who saves through faith. Ferguson pointed out that Paul speaks of "believing into Christ" and how this language is unique to the New Testament. The best part of the message was when Ferguson was explaining that God does not believe for us and how at the point of believing faith is active and faith is wholly receptive. Saving faith does not have a single constructive moment but we embrace Christ actively by faith. This message was very interesting and offered much to chew on.

After Ferguson was one more Q&A session followed by Sproul's last message on "Counted Righteous in Christ." Sproul centered on imputation and how salvation rests on imputation. Sproul explained how our righteousness is not a legal fiction but that we are truly righteous because Christ's righteousness is imputed to us when we believe. Sproul used the example of Abraham who believed God and it was accounted to him as righteousness. Abraham was justified before he was sanctified. Sproul also talked about how no one is justified apart from works. The point of disagreement between the Roman Catholic and Protestant church comes in when you ask the question, "by whose works are you justified?" The biblical answer is "by Christ's."

I really enjoyed learning more about the doctrines of subsitutionary atonement and imputation at this years Ligonier conference. I also enjoyed staying for the Hallelujah Chorus this year for the first time- a little glimpse of heaven! I was able to talk to Sproul at the end of the conference while waiting for the mp3 messages to be done. I expressed my thanks to him for his teaching on some of my favorite subjects- the psychology of unbelief and his exposition of Romans 1. I also picked up my first Ferguson book, "The Christian Life" and a few Sproul books I've wanted for a long time, "The Consequence of Ideas" and Classical Apologetics." I can't wait to eat them up!

Review of 2008 Ligonier's National Conference- Day 2

Day two of the Ligonier conference opened up with John MacArthur's message, "Simultaneously Righteous and a Sinner." MacArthur started out the message by talking about the teaching of Wesleyan Perfectionism and how it had infected evangelicalism. Some of the examples he gave were very familiar and were experienced by people I know. In speaking on justification and sanctification MacArthur taught:
-both originate from the free grace of God
-both are part of Christ's redemptive work
-both will be present in a person who is saved
-both begin simultaneously
-both are necessary for glorification
MacArthur gave an example of someone who righteous and a sinner at the same time in the apostle Paul who said he had a clear conscience and also called himself the chief of sinners. MacArthur explained that though we have new life we still have our old corpse strapped to us. MacArthur encouraged us to mortify the flesh by:
-using all the means of grace
-abstaining from sin
-keeping out of the way of temptation
-praying fervently
-keeping our eyes on Christ
MacArthur gave his great illustration from 1 Samuel 15 where he compares our battle with sin to the killing of King Agag. Saul was commanded to totally annihilate the Amalekites in battle but he disobeyed God and failed to kill them all. One of the Amalakites he left alive was King Agag. Samuel came and hacked Agag to pieces- just as we are to hack sin to pieces! This is a great analogy because we see clealry the consequences of not following God's command in this area- Some Amalekites got away under Saul and later on a particular Amalekite tried to wipe out the Jews in the book of Esther. If we do not kill sin it will wreak havoc in our life! MacArthur said mortification is a life long process and explained that as we grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ we will gain victory over sin more and more but said we will feel worse. Because the less we sin and the more we intimately we know God the more we will hate sin.
After MacArthur we were most blessed to hear again from Joni Eareckson Tada as she spoke on "Preaching the Gospel to All Nations." This was another very moving and convicting message from Tada filled with her immense compassion. This woman really has a heart to share the gospel and is obedient to God to do so often. She talked about how God purposes a global church and how we can't be "come and see churches" but instead we need to be "go and tell churches." She talked about how preaching without good deeds makes our message appear barren and how our good deeds adorn and beautify the gospel. This is a woman who is full of good deeds (I loved her story about evangelizing the illegal immigrants -and in Spanish- that she sees on the way to work!). She serves the kingdom more than anyone I know despite her debilitating disability. After hearing all about the ministry she is involved in I was quite ashamed of my able-body self who who does nothing compared to her!
Next came the Scott with, "The Substitutionary Atonement of Christ." Sinclair Ferguson was at the first Ligonier conference I attended. I enjoyed him much more this year as my ear has been trained in understanding accents now! This was my favorite message of the conference as it was an excellent exposition of Isaiah 52-53. Ferguson remarked on a how an ignorant friend of his in school introduced this passage as "the gospel according to Isaiah" and how he at first was embarrassed for his friend but then realized it was even more true than his friend knew. Ferguson talked about a lot of things like how this passage is what is known as a parabola and how the meaning or theme could be found in the middle of the passage and divided it up into 5 stanzas"
-Stanza 1: the Servant's triumph is wholly unexpected (52:13-15)
-Stanza 2: the Servant's humiliation is described (53:1-3)
-Stanza 3: the Servant's suffering is explained (53:4-6) *meaning
-Stanza 4: the Servant's obedience is underlined (53:7-9)
-Stanza 5: the Servant's glorious exaltation (53:10-12)
Ferguson goes on to teach about imputation and substitution and pulls out so many wonderful things from the text that instead of telling you any more about it I will let you listen to this awesome message for yourselves for I cannot do it justice! Listen here http://comequicklylordjesus.blogspot.com/2008/03/easter-weekend-messages.html
The next speaker was a Bible teacher I have heard on the internet but have never seen speak as this was his first time at the Ligonier conference. C.J. Mahaney spoke on "The Resurrection of Jesus." Mahaney reminds me a little bit of Piper because he speaks with so much passion and emotion and the way he cracks himself up reminds me of R.C. Sproul who makes himself laugh a lot. Mahaney talked a lot about death in his message. I was so glad because I think the idea of death is hugely missing in sermons today. This culture shuts a blind eye to death but as Mahaney reminded us, "we are all just standing in line." Mahaney taught that Easter is a yearly reminder of death and went on to say that Easter proclaims death, sin, and judgment do not have the final word because of Christ's resurrection. This resurrection announces forgiveness and that divine provision has been made for those who deserve punishment. Mahaney then focused on how belief in the resurrection should affect the way we live. "It is easier to affirm the resurrection than to apply it," Mahaney said. He went on to give a personal illustration about how the resurrection redefines death for the Christian that was quite powerful (if I can figure out how to put just this clip on I will upload it). His story illustrated how the resurrection brings freedom from the fear of death and wrath. He ended his story by saying, "I experienced the difference of the resurrection while making eye contact with death."
Sproul ended the second day of the conference with a teaching on "Sola Fide" which focused on faith being the means by which justification is given. Sproul went into detail as he contrasted the Roman Catholic belief that faith initiates salvation but is not sufficient in itself for justification with the Biblical doctrine of justification by faith alone. Sproul's message was very good -as is to be expected!

Review of 2008 Ligonier's National Conference- Day 1

This was my 5th year in a row going to the Ligonier's National Conference in Orlando, Florida. It is the thing I look forward to the most every year. This year's theme was "Evangelism According to Jesus." It was not at all a conference on how to do evangelism but rather it centered on making sure we as believers understand the elements of the gospel message ourselves and stressed the importance the word of God plays in bringing people to salvation.

The conference kicked off with Steven J. Lawson's message "The Foolishness of Preaching." This was the first time I have ever heard Lawson preach. The conference emcee was right when he made a comment after Lawson preached that we had blast off! Lawson is a very strong preacher who preaches with authority and does not stop to take a breath- ever! He is rapid fire for an hour straight! Here are some of my favorite quotes from this teaching:

"The herald of the gospel is not results oriented but obedience oriented."

"Men today are more interested in filling the building than filling the pulpit."

"There is one solution to the human dilemma- the word of the cross."

"The wisdom of the world and the foolishness of the cross are going in two different directions."

"God designed the message and the method of how it would go forth(preaching) so that His wisdom and power would be on display."

"The preacher need not beguile the audience because people believe by the power of the word of God."

The second lecture was given by R.C. Sproul Jr. on "Evangelizing Your Children." I got a good laugh when Sproul Jr. was talking about how different denominations view their children: Lutherans, Methodist, & Anglicans are not worried about their children, Baptists view their children as horrible sinners who need to be preached the gospel, and Presbyterians see their children as "baby vipers wearing covenant diapers." Ha, ha, ha! Anyway, the overall theme of Sproul's message was that "To repent and believe the gospel is the answer to every problem." Sproul focused on how we need to be people who repent and not be people who live like we don't sin. His message was directed towards how parents are to evangelize children but was applicable to all relationships. Some quotes from message:

"We will never evangelize by pretending to be something we are not."

"They (our children and all people) need to us repenting and believing the gospel."

"It is foolish to think we will bring people into the kingdom by seeming that we don't sin."

The next message "Good News in a Fallen World" was given by Joni Eareckson Tada. This was the first time I had ever heard her speak and I have to admit I was afraid for her. I was afraid of how she would do. I mean she is a woman -and sorry if this is offensive- but women are not nearly as good at teaching the Bible as the men are. If you disagree with that send me some links to awesome and deep women Bible teachers and prove me wrong, PLEASE!) And not only is she a woman but she was teaching on the same stage as the GREATS! I was afraid for her. The truth is Tada was the like the horse at the track with the worst odds who won the big race. She was awesome! On top of her excellent teaching on bringing the gospel among the suffering in this fallen world her message was beautifully adorned with deep emotion, sensitivity, and compassion that only a woman could bring. Sproul added much by the addition of Tada to the conference this year. She teaches suffering with the authority of deep personal knowledge and reminds us:

"Suffering shows us who we are inside."

"When we are made to suffer we feel the sting of sin and it exposes to us what a poison sin is."

I really cannot do justice to her message but you could tell by the response of the audience that people were hit hard. After this followed a Q & A session with the three speakers. These sessions are a nice repose after brain frying lectures. Some small tidbits from the Q & A:

"The church gathers to worship and scatters to witness."

"Seeker sensitive churches are VBS for adults."

"Everyone rests in the gracious hand of God until they die."

"We live in a culture where people believe that a profession of faith saves them rather than a possession of faith."

Thus ended the pre-conference seminar. The actual conference started Thursday night with more rapid fire preaching from Steven J. Lawson, this time on "The Saving Power of God." Some of my favorite quotes from this message:

"Christ must be fully man and fully God to represent both parties in order to bring about reconciliation."

"We have not evangelized until we have shared the person and work of Christ." (this was said in regard to people thinking that sharing their testimony or witnessing is evangelism)

"We have been saved to serve."

"We bring a message so powerful that no one is beyond it."

"God's wrath is currently damned up by his mercy but it is building and building."

The last address of the night was given by John MacArthur on "Who Is Jesus?" MacArthur is my favorite as I have been raised in the faith on his teaching but I am most sorry to say that at this late hour my jet lag overwhelmed me and I became quite delirious and have no notes to pass on. I only recall what teaching I did hear was incredible- as usual. I look forward to listening to this message again.
Before I conclude this conference day I must give a shout out to the Westminster Brass and the organ woman who play the hymns that I look so forward to every year. The worship music at the Ligonier conference is the best. I wish they would come live at my church!

Rundown of the 2007 Ligonier Ministries National Conference

This was the fourth Ligonier Ministries National Conference I've attended and was my most favorite one yet. This years topic "Contending for the Truth" is a favorite of mine as it encompassed philosophy and apologetics. I wanted to tell you about each lecture but unfortunately I lost all the notes I took so here is just a brief rundown of the conference.

Zacharias opened the pre-conference up with a bang when he spoke on "Postmodernism and Philosophy." Zacharias is an impressive speaker to listen to; filled with insight, wisdom and awesome stories of personal experiences. Mohler followed with a lecture on "Postmodernism and Society." Mohler is so up to date and in the loop on culture and current events and has a keen and discerning mind. RC Sproul Jr. then spoke on "Postmodernism and Christianity." I always look forward to Sproul Jr.'s lectures each conference and wish he would speak more than once. A question and answer session followed with the above mentioned speakers which is always enlightening and entertaining.

RC Sproul opened the conference up Thursday night with an awesome lecture entitled "The Task of Apologetics." This was one of my favorite lectures of the entire conference. John Piper entered the conference after Sproul with a lecture called "Faith and Reason" which, delieverd with all of Piper's passion, was superb!

MacArthur was the first speaker Friday morning and opened up with "The Challenge of Science." I expected this to be similar to his most excellent series called "Battle for the Beginning" but it was not as good. If you do not have "Battle for the Beginning" I HIGHLY recommend it. Piper followed with the "The Challenge of Relativism." This lecture was good but I liked his first lecture better. MacAthur then blew the crowd away with his treament of "The Problem of Evil." This lecture was typical of MacArthur and was outstanding!
Zacharias spoke in the afternoon on "The Existence of God" which was good but I liked his first lecture better. Mohler closed the Friday afternoon session with "The Authority of Scripture." By this time I must admit my brain had started smoking and was no longer functioning properly. I will have to listen to this lecture again when I get the conference DVDs.

Mohler opened the conference back up Saturday morning with "The Holy Spirit and Apologetics." This was Mohler's best lecture of the conference in my opinion and was excellent. After this was the last question and answer session. Zacharias, Sproul, and Mohler handled the questions and never ceased to awe and amaze with their wisdom. Zacharias is bold in the truth and at the same time so compassionate and respectful to those of other beliefs it is no wonder he garners so much respect himself. Sproul closed out the conference with "The Resurrection of Christ" and started out speaking on philosophy and Kant. This lecture was so interesting but I didn't get to hear the entire thing because we had to leave early. I can't wait to get the conference DVDs to watch the rest of this one!

All of the speakers were so good but I would have to say this year my favorite was RC Sproul. I got so much out of his lectures and can't wait to see them again. The music this year was also wonderful and I bought a CD from the Westminster Brass. There is nothing like hearing "A Mighty Fortress" played by the brass and the hugest pipe organ I have ever seen. It makes you feel like Martin Luther make come walking out at any minute!

Next years conference will be on EVANGELISM with RC Sproul, John MacArthur, Steve Lawson, Sinclair Furgeson, and Johnny Erickson Tada. Hope to see you there!
